Klindt's Booksellers YA Creative Writing Workshops

Klindt's is excited to host four writing workshops in conjunction with our 3rd Annual Young Adult (YA) Author Event. Four wonderful award-winning authors will be putting on fun, energetic and creative workshops that you won't want to miss.

Here are descriptions and details with date, time and location of each workshop, (they are taking place at Klindt's and Brama Cafe). Please call us at 541-296-3355 or email us at events@klindtsbooks.com with any questions or to register now.

Jill Williamson
SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY STORYWORLD BUILDING
The world you create for your novel is as important as your main characters. In this workshop, we’ll talk about how to use characterization techniques to make your storyworld feel like a real place. We’ll talk maps, cities, people and beasts, names, magic, and how to follow the laws you create. We’ll also learn how to keep it all organized.
Ages 12+, adults welcome.
Friday, May 31. 4PM @ Brama Café.

Virginia Euwer Wolff
SURPRISE YOURSELF
Please bring your natural curiosity and some free-floating space in your mind to let words walk around in. We'll do several short writing exercises. Be ready to surprise yourself by writing things you didn't know you knew. We respect your privacy; reading your work aloud to us is optional. You, your boldness, your shyness, and your sense of humor are welcome in this workshop. Your cell phone is not. And don't forget to bring something to write with and paper.
Ages 12-18.
Friday, May 31. 4PM @ Klindt’s

Mike Mullin
HYPERACTIVE FERRETS?
What do S.E. Hinton, Christopher Paolini, and Kody Keplinger have in common? They all published their first novels as teenagers. You can too! This isn’t a workshop; it’s a funshop. Come prepared to be loud and crazy, to break things, and to write like hyperactive ferrets. If ferrets could write. Which they can’t, but that’s beside the point. Everyone will leave with a plan for writing their first novel! Ages 12+.
Sunday, June 2. 10AM @ Klindt’s

Rae Carson
SHAMELESS, PASSIONATE WRITING
Ever wonder exactly what to write about? Do you struggle to come up with a good idea? Or worse, do you have too many ideas and don't know what to do with them? Rae will help you unlock the ideas you're most passionate about, the unique themes, characters, and stories that you are meant to write. Bring paper, a pen or pencil, and a willingness to remember how fun writing can be.
Ages 12+, adults welcome.
Sunday, June 2. 10AM @ Brama Café.

Thank you to Brama Cafe for helping support these workshops!

Eanger Irving Couse on the Columbia River

Art student Eanger Irving Couse married Virginia Walker in Paris in 1889. Two years later, the couple spent a season living with Virginia’s parents at the Walker Ranch in Klickitat County, where Couse first painted Indian subjects. The couple returned to the area in 1896–1898 and during those years the artist created more works featuring local Indians. The exhibit will showcase approximately 20 original paintings and related artifacts and archival material.

Jun 16   "To Protect and Preserve"
Dads get free admission on Father’s Day 2013
“To Protect and Preserve” Historic Firearms Demonstration June 16

The Dalles, Oregon  –  Columbia Gorge Discovery Center will offer free admission to fathers on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16, 2013, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  At 1 p.m. join Gary Lentz, retired Washington State Parks Ranger, as he presents his Lewis and Clark program "To Protect and Preserve." Lentz portrays Sgt. Patrick Gass, one of the three sergeants on the Lewis and Clark military expedition. Firearms were important tools for the Corps of Discovery and "Sgt. Gass" will explain and demonstrate the flintlock firearms from small pistols to the blunderbuss and swivel gun, edged weapons such as swords and knives and the tools that kept them working.
A hearty lunch special will be available in the Basalt Rock Café for $6.75.

Gary Lentz chose Sgt. Patrick Gass as his persona because he was born only 3 miles from the sergeant’s home and grew up the first 19 years of his life in the same locations where this famous member of the Expedition once lived.  He has hiked, camped, canoed and ridden many parts of the trail in the Pacific Northwest and knows and practices many of the skills used by the original Corps of Discovery.
Lentz is a retired Park Ranger who has worked for Washington State Parks for over 35 years. Twenty eight of those years have been at Lewis & Clark Trail State Park. He was appointed to the Governor's Lewis & Clark Trail Committee in 1982 and served until 2010.  As a member of this committee he has had the opportunity to discuss many aspects of the expedition with authors, historians and others knowledgeable on the subject.  He is past-president of the Washington State Chapter of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.
Lentz conducts living history demonstrations at State and Federal parks, schools, youth camps, community service groups, historical societies, museums and many other locations along the trail.  He has written articles on the firearms, medicine and other aspects of the expedition for the Washington State Chapter of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Newsletter, Worthy of Note,  The National Foundation's, We Proceeded On magazine, and for displays, markers and plaques around the State.
The Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum is the official interpretive center for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.  Live raptor shows are presented daily. Hands-on, multi-media exhibits illuminate the cultural and natural history of the Gorge, including Ice Age geology, Native American culture, Lewis and Clark's cargo, the Oregon Trail, trade, transportation, ecology, and more. The Discovery Center is located off I-84 at exit 82, 5000 Discovery Drive, The Dalles, Oregon, 97058.  Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Free admission for fathers on Father’s Day, June 16. Adult admission is $9, seniors $7, kids 6 to16 are $5, and children 5 and under free.  For more information, phone (541) 296-8600, or visit www.gorgediscovery.org

Jun 17   Beauty Lou and the Country Beast - Auditions

Beauty Lou and the Country Beast

Written by Jim Caron and Michael McGill

Beauty Lou is the oldest daughter of the bronc-bustin' balladeer Buckaroo Bob. At the local county fair, young Beauty Lou is upset by the ungrateful behavior of a miner who has won the blue ribbon for his beautiful roses. She calls him a beast and wishes that he would look like one too. Years later, when in danger of losing the family farm, Buckaroo Bob meets the miner-turned-beast. Beauty Lou agrees to befriend the beast in order to save her family. Beauty Lou and the beast both learn to look beyond appearances and first impressions and to see the beauty that dwells inside. The story, set in the American West, also features Beauty Lou's six sisters, her imaginary friend, her dog Fleabite Clyde, farmhands slim and Dusty, and the Barnyard Critters ("The Chronicle", 2006, para. 5).

This production is part of The Missoula Children's Theatre's unique international touring project and is presented locally by The Theatre Company of The Dalles. Their productions are complete with costumes, scenery, props, and makeup. Each show is usually an hour.

Jun 21   "The Life of Vesper Geer"
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center hosts a pasta bar dinner and historical documentary film, Friday, June 21. A pasta dinner at 5:30 p.m., will be followed at 6:30 by a 65-minute film, “The Life of Vesper Geer.” The film was created by Michael Turner, artist-in-residence at the GeerCrest Farm and Historical Society in the Willamette Valley. Vesper was a 4th generation owner of the Geer farmstead, the oldest frame-built house in Oregon to remain in the same family and the state’s second deeded land claim. For 155 years, Geer ancestors have lived on the same farm pioneered by R. C. Geer, who in 1847 was among the first people to travel to the Willamette Valley via the Barlow Road portion of the Oregon Trail. The Geer family story is in many ways the story of Oregon itself. Turner will also show the world-premier of “Musa Geer and the Goodnoe Hills,” a 5-minute short film on Vesper Geer’s aunt Musa who was postmistress for 47 years of the Goodnoe Hills post office in Klickitat County.
The pasta bar dinner is $15 or $25 per couple and dinner reservations are required by June 19. Film only is $3. The Discovery Center is located at 5000 Discovery Drive, The Dalles, Oregon.  For more information, phone (541) 296-8600 x 201, or visit www.gorgediscovery.org.
